Description

 Prerequisites:

This course is designed to serve as an introduction to Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting and as such, no specific prerequisite skills or training is required. However, familiarity with the basics of climate change, the framework of Governmental structure and procedure, knowledge of Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word as well as analytical skills will be useful. The course work is interdisciplinary and the training provided assumes a broad level of technical knowledge.

Course Description

On January 1, 2010, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will, for the first time, require large emitters of heat-trapping emissions to begin collecting greenhouse gas (GHG) data under a new reporting system. This new program will cover approximately 85 percent of the nation’s GHG emissions and apply to roughly 10,000 facilities. EPA’s new reporting system will provide a better understanding of where GHGs are coming from and will guide development of the best possible policies and programs to reduce emissions. The data will also allow businesses to track their own emissions, compare them with those of similar facilities, and provide assistance in identifying cost-effective ways to reduce emissions in the future. This comprehensive, nationwide emissions data will help in the fight against climate change.

GHG Accounting
  • Carbon Credits/Markets
  • Protocols and Verification
  • Regulatory Policy – International, National & Regional
  • Reducing Emissions – Transportation & The Built Environment

In the context of national and international environmental trends, the course will focus on how to establish a GHG inventory and the rules, regulations and protocols surrounding them. The course will also offer an overview of the most accepted standards for GHG emissions reporting and the importance of third-party verification entities. By the end of the course attendees should have an understanding of GHG policy and regulations, have the skills necessary to create a GHG inventory and a working knowledge of carbon credits, carbon markets and the verification processes.

Objectives

By the end of the course learners will
  • Understand the fundamentals of greenhouse gas accounting and the various mechanisms of carbon markets.
  • Understand how to establish and assess an organization’s GHG profile and create a GHG inventory.
  • List and identify the protocols and regulations associated with GHG accounting
  • Describe national and international GHG trends and define what the implications of these trends mean for the future with regards to government policy and business development.
  • Understand the built environment’s contribution to greenhouse gas emissions and the potential for reducing emissions in this sector.

Course Activities

The course will consist of lecture providing an introduction and overview of GHG accounting. The course will also require learners to participate by answering questions and assessing scenarios proposed by the instructor(s).

Required Materials
Please bring to class:
  • Calculator
  • Laptop computer
Course Assessment
At the end of the course, attendees will complete a brief assessment with questions covering what they have learned and / or the attendees will be divided into work groups where they will be given a practical assignment such as determining the GHG inventory of a company and writing an assessment based on the inventory.

Course Instructor

Mark van Soestbergen, President, International Carbon Bank and Exchange, in conjunction with CarbonSolutions, a consulting firm specialized in GHG accounting is the course developer and instructor.

Mr. van Soestbergen has been in the greenhouse gas arena for almost 20 years. He started in 1990 by designing Carbon Zero Fuel strategies for a major Japanese oil company, and funded tree planting in Asia by selling ‘eco-car’ stickers to offset vehicle emissions. He has since worked on database solutions to track emission activities in large organizations and facilitated one of the first international transactions of certified emission reductions.

Mark is a nationally recognized lecturer on climate change adaptation strategies, provides carbon footprint training for members of the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) and recently served as a co-chair at EPA's 16th and 17th Annual International Emissions Inventory Conference.
