Coordinator Stephanie West, (352) 392-9570 x216
Description

This three-day, interactive workshop will allow the plant operator to investigate and participate in solving real world problems with activated sludge process treatment plants.  Students are shown process control testing techniques, how to interpret the data and use the information to troubleshoot and recommend a course of corrective action.  A blend of lecture, hands-on demonstration and group interaction are employed during the course to make it a fun and active learning experience.

Learn how to identify, evaluate and solve operational difficulties before they become serious. The instructor explains data, tests and calculations used for process monitoring and troubleshooting. You apply the evaluation process in detailed, realistic examples. You are encouraged to bring a calculator for use during exercises. After completion of this training, you should be able to optimize the performance of an existing wastewater treatment system in order to achieve regulatory compliance and minimize environmental impacts.

What you will learn:

  • Facility troubleshooting and optimization
  • Activated sludge operating modes and process control methods
  • Effects of industrial waste and sewer-use ordinances
  • Unit process evaluation and optimization
  • Biological nutrient removal
  • Sludge stabilization and disposal

Depending on availablity, this course includes a visit to a Wastewater Treatment Facility.

It is recommended that students of this advanced course be familiar with the activated sludge process, and have a thorough working knowledge of the various modes of operation before taking this course.  Not for the beginner!

Daily breaks provided. You are on your own for lunch.

Course Objective
At the completion of the training the student should be able to optimize the performance of an existing activated sludge wastewater treatment system in order to achieve regulatory compliance and minimize environmental impacts.

Who Should Attend

This course is for water and wastewater treatment plant managers, advanced level operators and supervisors; for crew chiefs, lead operators and shift foremen; for public works foremen and superintendents; and for regulatory agency personnel.
What our students are saying about this course:
A very valuable tool for anyone who works in WW. A real eye opener. This was the best troubleshooting course I have attended. Ron keeps the information interesting!

This course covered things I had once learned, but, don’t directly deal with on my shift. Got more insight on the relationship of micro-organisms/bacteria, and a good quality effluent.

Course Instructor: Ron Trygar, CET
Ron has recently joined the UF TREEO Center staff as our Senior Training Specialist for Water and Wastewater. He has worked in the wastewater industry for twenty five years in a variety of locations and jobs. In 1998 Ron became a Certified Environmental Trainer (CET) and has since provided training for associations and regulatory agencies such as FDEP; UF-TREEO Center; FW&PCOA Short Schools; USABlueBook; FWEA sponsored training events and local school environmental programs. He has also assisted the U.S. EPA in providing flow measurement training in Tallahassee, and along with the FDEP Northeast District, he helped begin the FRWA/FDEP joint operator certification review classes that are still given around the state today.  Ron holds a Florida class A wastewater treatment operator’s license and a Florida class C drinking water operator’s license.
