Water Quality Courses Offered in June:

Activated Sludge Troubleshooting: Understanding and Controlling Your Plant

This course helps operators to identify, evaluate, and solve operational difficulties before they become serious. Data, tests and calculations used for process monitoring and troubleshooting are explained. Each student has the opportunity to apply the evaluation process in detailed, realistic examples.

You must be present for entire class to receive continuing education credit and Certificate of Attendance.

Daily breaks provided. You are on your own for lunch.

About the Course

Learn how identify, evaluate and solve operational difficulties before they become serious. The instructor explains data, tests and calculations used for process monitoring and troubleshooting. You apply the evaluation process in detailed, realistic examples. You are encouraged to bring a calculator for use during exercises. After completion of this training, you should be able to optimize the performance of an existing wastewater treatment system in order to achieve regulatory compliance and minimize environmental impacts.

What you will learn:

This course includes visits to two advanced wastewater treatment facilities, including the University of Florida 3.0 MGD Kruger BioDenipo process facility and the Gainesville Regional Utilities Kanapaha Advanced Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Who Should Attend

This course is for water and wastewater treatment plant managers, advanced level operators and supervisors; for crew chiefs, lead operators and shift foremen; for public works foremen and superintendents; and for regulatory agency personnel.

Course Instructor: Ron Trygar, CET

Ron has worked in the wastewater industry since 1983 in a variety of locations and jobs. In 1998 Ron became a Certified Environmental Trainer (CET) and has since provided training for associations and regulatory agencies such as FDEP; UF-TREEO Center; FW&PCOA Short Schools; FWEA sponsored training events and local school district environmental programs. He has also assisted the U.S. EPA in providing flow measurement training in Tallahassee, and along with the FDEP Northeast District, he helped begin the FRWA/FDEP joint operator certification review classes that are still given around the state today.

Ron opened Trygar Consulting Services in December 2004, which is currently based in Lynn Haven, Florida . He is active with the FDEP Operator Certification Wastewater Exam Review Committee and is currently working with the University of Florida Department of Continuing Education (DOCE) as the author and instructor of the Class D wastewater operator correspondence course. Ron has also authored a short manual entitled "Nitrogen Control n Wastewater Treatment  Plants" to assist operators at their treatment plants and help prepare them for the State of Florida operator exams. In addition to treatment plant consulting work, he also presents training sessions provided by the USA BlueBook Company to the many Rural Water Associations around the United States. Ron currently holds Florida Class A Wastewater Operator and Florida Class C Drinking Water Operator licenses.

National Operator Trainer’s Conference Comes to Florida!

Come join us in Orlando on June 10-13, 2007 as UF TREEO hosts the National Operator Trainer’s Conference (NOTC).  It’s a great bargain: operators can obtain 1.6 CEU’s for only $200.  Many attendees are planning on bringing their families and making it a summer vacation since the conference is at Royal Plaza Hotel that’s located in the Downtown Disney Resort area.

The NOTC Conference provides an opportunity for practical training and information exchange by national experts. It also allows trainers to share their knowledge and experience in facilitating across state and regional boundaries. This conference also offers a forum for state and regional coordinators and training centers to network and receive information regarding the effective operations management and evaluation assistance for the hundreds of municipalities and Tribes which are helped each year under the 104g program.

There are many valuable training sessions before and after the Conference!  Scheduled Pre-conference workshops include:

·          SCADA System Fundamentals and Applications, presented by Joe Hurley, Woodard & Curran

·          New Technologies for Wastewater Operators, presented by Jason Cumberland of Hach Co.

Post-Conference workshop include:

·          Hands-On Technical Demonstrations and Plant Tour of Orange County Utilities, South Water Reclamation Facility

Presentations to be delivered during the Conference include:

·          Membrane Technology

·          Water Reuse in Florida and Reuse case studies

·          Biosolids Technology Update

·          Collection System Maintenance-Fighting FOG

·          Preparing for Regulatory Inspections – prepare for success

·          And much, much more!

These exciting training sessions follow an opening keynote address by John Hankinson on Monday, June 11th. For more information, please check out the NOTC website at: http://www.treeo.ufl.edu/conferences/notc/  We are very excited to host this conference and look forward to seeing you there!

TREEO allows you to put your plant “Under the Microscope!”

A new course comes to UF TREEO: Microbiology of Activated Sludge, a hands-on training event.  This two-day class is designed to give wastewater treatment plant operators a hands-on approach to using a microscope for process control of their activated sludge wastewater treatment plant.  Operators are encouraged to bring samples of their biomass to use in identifying and troubleshooting potential process problems and how to properly operate and maintain advanced microscopes.

Exam Preparation: Water and wastewater operators preparing for the State of Florida Operators Exams have been taking advantage of several UF TREEO exam preparation courses.  Instructors Charlie Martin and Ron Trygar present the courses for operators and trainees of both water and wastewater facilities, hoping to impart the wisdom needed to obtain a passing grade on their exams.  The courses are very intense, and cover a wide range of processes, chemistry, biology and mathematics. The instructors do not teach someone how to take a test, they offer the knowledge an operator needs to understand before taking the exam.  With a thorough understanding of the physical, chemical and biological processes, an operator can respond to just about any question, no matter how it is worded.  Ron Trygar has been offering this course in the past, and has seen a 60-65% pass rate after taking his courses.  The statewide average for the wastewater C-B exams have been between 35-45% in recent exam cycles.  For more information about the Water and Wastewater Exam Prep classes that UF TREEO Offers, go to the UF TREEO Water Quality webpage at: http://www.treeo.ufl.edu/water/

The Water Class C&B Exam prep class is on August 8-9, 2007 at the UF TREEO Center.  This course will cover:

  • Surface water treatment

·          Lime softening
