Environmental Management Systems Institute

The University of Florida TREEO Center has been selected by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Office of Water to become one of eight Environmental Management System Local Resource Centers nationwide. The Local Resource Centers operate as part of EPA's major new initiative to support the implementation of environmental management systems at local government agencies.
Environmental management systems provide organizations with a structured process for managing environmental and regulatory responsibilities. The Local Resource Centers provide real-life mentors, technical expertise and problem-solving strategies to help local governments make their operations more environmentally friendly.

- What is an Environmental Management System?
-
Environmental Management Systems (EMS) provide the tools and processes that can enhance an organization's ability to improve its environmental performance, prevent pollution and meet and move beyond compliance requirements. EMS provide organizations with a structured process for meeting environmental goals by identifying and reducing a broad range of environmental impacts from their operations. Until recently, environmental management systems have been used extensively in private industry, but are now being adopted by a growing number of local governments.
