According to the Florida Energy Extension Service, housekeepers can have a significant effect on the amount of energy consumed.16 The following housekeeping procedures can save energy.

  1. Turn off or reset heating and cooling systems in unoccupied rooms.
Turning off heating and cooling systems in unoccupied rooms will help reduce costs without affecting the comfort of guests and staff.
  2. Close draperies and shades when leaving guest rooms.
This will reduce heat loss in winter and heat gain in summer.
  3. Turn off guest room lights, televisions and radios in unoccupied rooms.
Create reminder cards to remind guests to turn off lights, televisions and radios when they leave the room.
  4. Use natural lighting when cleaning guest rooms.
Remind housekeeping to close draperies when leaving guest room.
  5. Clean lighting fixtures.
Bulbs will produce more light after cleaning.
  6. Limit the amount of hot water used for cleaning.
Limiting the amount of hot water used for cleaning will save water heating costs.
  7. Report any necessary equipment repairs.
Regular equipment maintenance will increase performance and decrease energy consumption.
  8. Install Energy StarŪ clothes washers.
Energy StarŪ clothes washers use 50% less energy. They also use 40-50% less water, which makes less water to heat and shorter drying times.
  9. Capture and reuse waste heat from laundry operations.
